On Friday, February 18th, 2000, about 10:15 p.m., Alexander “Sasha” Kalaba was with a friend and three other men: Sean Browne, Alas Warsame (19 years-of-age at the time of this crime) and Mohamed Guled (also 19 years-of-age at the time of this crime) in the parking lot of “The Masters” condominium complex, 296 Mill Road, Toronto. They were all seated in a 1995 Cadillac, driven by Kalaba. All the men knew each other.
After a minor drug transaction between Kalaba and Guled, an argument erupted between the Warsame and Kalaba. Warsame reached over the rear seat and placed Kalaba in a headlock. Guled and Browne started to kick and punch Kalaba, demanding that he give up the drugs he had bought. Kalaba refused and ordered Browne, Warsame and Guled to leave his vehicle. Browne and Warsame complied.
However, the fight resumed and Kalaba was again attacked. Guled remained in the vehicle, demanding that Kalaba surrender the drugs.
Browne placed a knife to Haas’ throat, telling him to stay out of the confrontation.
During the altercation, Browne stabbed Kalaba in the chest with a knife. After the stabbing, Browne, Warsame and Guled fled the scene.
Kalaba slumped in his vehicle, having been locked inside by the fleeing attackers. Haas was unable to gain entry to assist his friend. Utilizing the help of friends, he obtained a spare car key from the victim’s home, which was brought to the scene.
Kalaba was removed from the car and rushed to the Trillium Health Centre in Mississauga. He succumbed to his injury at the hospital.
An autopsy determined that Alexander “Sasha” Kalaba died from a stab wound to the chest.
On February 19th, 2000, Sean Nelson Browne was arrested and charged with 1st-degree murder. Arrest warrants were issued for Alas Warsame and Mohamed Guled on charges of 1st-degree murder.
