The following are the facts and circumstances surrounding the death of Sharmini ANANDAVEL.
Sharmini ANANDAVEL was a 15-year-old student who attended Woodbine Junior High School and lived with her parents.
On June 12, 1999 at approximately 9:00 a.m., Sharmini left her home after telling her parents that she was going out with a friend to inquire about a possible part-time job. When she did not return home that evening, her parents called the police who immediately commenced an investigation into her disappearance.
Detectives from 33 Division CIB headed the police investigation.
The investigation ran through the summer with no success.
On Saturday, October 9, 1999, a pedestrian walking through the Finch East Park near Leslie Street and Finch Avenue West spotted an object he thought to be a human skull. The police were called and went to the park where a human skull was located.
On Sunday, October 10, 1999, members from 33 Division, returned to Finch East Park and began to search the area. The search yielded other body parts.
On Tuesday, October 12, 1999, Detectives from 33 Division CIB located dental files for Sharmini ANADAVEL. With the use of these charts, a forensic odentologist, was able to identify the skull found in the park as belonging to Sharmini ANADAVEL.
The investigation is continuing.
