Three arrested for three retail robberies

The Toronto Police Service Hold Up Squad would like to make the public aware of arrests made in three retail robberies in the west end of Toronto.

On Wednesday, February 13, 2019, at midnight two men entered a convenience store located in the area of Wilson Avenue and Jane Street .

It is alleged that:

- one man rushed toward a store employee by striking him in the face with a hammer

- the other man was armed with a large knife which he pointed at the store employee's stomach and pushed him towards the cash register demanding money

- a second employee arrived and was confronted, pushed to the ground with the knife held to his neck

- the men made off with a quantity of cash and cigarettes

- the store employee was taken to the hospital and required surgery for a broken jaw


It is further alleged that:

On Monday, February 18, 2019, at 12:30 a.m., three masked men entered a convenience store located in the area of Martin Grove Road south of Steeles Avenue West

- one of the men was armed with a sawed-off shotgun and demanded the store employee open the cash register

- the two other men went behind the counter removing a quantity of cash and cigarettes which they put in their duffel bag and fled in a stolen vehicle


It is further alleged that:

On Monday, February 18, 2019, at 3:55 a.m., three masked men entered a convenience store located in the area of Islington Avenue and The Queensway.

- one of the men was armed with a sawed-off shotgun and demanded the store employee open the cash register

- the other two men went behind the counter removing cigarettes, cigars and cash

- two uniform officers approached the front of the store unaware that a robbery was taking place

- a suspect, who saw the officers approach, concealed the shotgun down his pants and walked out the store

- the other two men attempted to leave the store but the police intervened realizing there was a robbery in progress

- one man broke free from the officers and fled the scene

- the third man resisted arrest, kicking and punching at both officers before he taken into custody

Upon further investigation by Hold Up Squad officers, the two other men were arrested in a stolen vehicle and a loaded sawed-off shotgun was recovered.

On Monday, February 18, 2019, Julian Diraimo, 19, of Woodbridge, was arrested. He is charged with:

1. two counts of Armed Robbery with a Firearm
2. two counts of Disguise with Intent
3. Possession of Property Obtained by Crime (under)
4. two counts of Assault with Intent to Resist Arrest

He is scheduled to appear in court at 2201 Finch Avenue West on Thursday, April 4, 2019 at 2 pm

On Tuesday, February 26, 2019, Ondrej Balog, 19, of Vaughan, was charged with:

1. two counts of Robbery with a Firearm
2. two counts Disguise with Intent
3. Possession Property Obtained by Crime Under
4. Possession Property Obtained by Crime Over
5. Assault with Intent to resist Arrest
6. Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
7. Possession of a Firearm knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
8. Possession of a firearm knowing the serial number has been tampered
9. Possession of Prohibited Firearm with Ammunition
10.Careless storage of a firearm


On Tuesday, February 26, 2019, Cody Ottaway, 19, of Toronto, was charged with:

1. three counts of robbery with a Firearm
2. Robbery with an Offensive Weapon
3. Aggravated Assault
4. two counts of Disguise with Intent
5. Possession Property Obtained by Crime Under
6. Possession Property Obtained by Crime Over
7. Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
8. Possession of a Firearm knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
9. Possession of a firearm knowing the serial number has been tampered
10.Possession of Prohibited Firearm with Ammunition
11.Careless storage of a firearm

He is scheduled to appear in court at 2201 Finch Avenue West on Thursday, February 28, 2019, at 10 am
