Several arrests in cellphone store Robberies,
Matrix Bandits

On Wednesday, June 12, 2019, Inspector Lauren Pogue of Hold Up provided an update on numerous ongoing cellphone store robbery investigations.

Toronto Police Service Hold-Up investigators would like to make the public aware of the investigation into 32 cellphone store robberies that occurred in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), including Toronto, York, Peel, Halton and Hamilton. The investigation into this group, called the Matrix Bandits, began in December 2018 and ran for six months culminating a total of 13 search warrants, 22 males arrested, and 278 charges laid.

It is alleged that:

- during the robberies between two and five males entered the stores, controlling the employees and customers thru the use of weapons, threats and zip ties
- the employees were ordered to fill large gym bags with cellphones and the males fled the scenes utilizing stolen vehicles
- new members of the criminal group were recruited through the use of social media platforms
- robberies escalated and used different methods, clothing and expanding the area where they occurred

The boys ranged from 15 to 17 and the men as old as 25, some of the accused had no previous contact with the police.

Toronto Police Hold Up investigators took the lead in a joint investigation involving the York Regional Police Hold Up Unit and Peel Regional Police Central Robbery Unit, Halton Regional Police Robbery Unit and with the assistance of Toronto Police Service 31 and 32 Division Major Crime Units.

The project resulted in charges in relation to 23 cellphone store robberies, two carjackings, a street robbery and seven thefts of vehicles from Toronto, York, Barrie and Halton.

Between Saturday, January 12, 2019 to Thursday, January 17, 2019, the following people were arrested:

Junior Hazzard, 19, of Toronto, was charged with:
1. 10 counts of Robbery
2. 13 counts of Possession Property Obtained by Crime
3. 17 counts of Fail to Comply with Probation
4. Possession of a Weapon
5. Theft of Motor Vehicle
6. Dangerous Operation of a Vehicle
7. Flight while Pursued by Police
8. Two counts of Theft Under $5000

Young Person (1), of Toronto, was charged with:
1. Six counts of Robbery
2. Six counts of Disguise with Intent
3. Nine counts of Possession Property Obtained by Crime
4. Possession of a Weapon
5. Two counts of Theft of Motor Vehicle

Young Person (2), of Toronto, was charged with:
1. Two counts of Robbery
2. Three counts of Possession Property Obtained by Crime
3. Dangerous Operation of a Vehicle
4. Flight while Pursued by Police

Ray Hamzah, 18, of Brampton, was charged with:
1. Two counts of Robbery
2. Two counts of Disguise with Intent
3. Two counts of Possession of a Weapon
4. Four counts of Possession Property Obtained by Crime
5. Theft of Motor Vehicle

Young Person (3), of Toronto, was charged with:
1. Robbery (street robbery)
2. Possession Property Obtained by Crime

Young Person (4), of Toronto, was charged with:
1. Robbery (street robbery)
2. Two counts of Possession Property Obtained by Crime

Young Person (5), of North York was charged with:
1. Robbery (street robbery)
2.Two counts of Possession Property Obtained by Crime

Jemeal Fyke, 19, of Scarborough was charged with:
1. Two counts of Theft of Motor Vehicle
2. Two counts of Possession Property Obtained by Crime
3. Two counts of Fail to Comply with Probation


On Wednesday, February 6, 2019, Young Person (6), of Brampton, was arrested and charged:
1. Five counts of Robbery
2. Five counts of Disguise with Intent
3. Four counts of Possession of a Weapon
4. Eight counts of Possession Property Obtained by Crime
5. Trafficking in Property Obtained by Crime


Between Monday, April 1, 2019 and Monday, April 15, 2019, York Regional Police Robbery Unit arrested:

Young Person (7), of Brampton, was charged with:
1. Two counts of Robbery
2. Two counts of Disguise with Intent
3. Possession of Property Obtained by Crime

Young Person (8), of Brampton, was charged with:
1. Two counts of Robbery
2. Two counts of Disguise with Intent
3. Possession of Property Obtained by Crime

Young Person (9), of Brampton, was charged with:
1. Two counts of Robbery
2. Two counts of Disguise with Intent
3. Possession of Property Obtained by Crime

Haleem Abdelrahman, 18, of Brampton, was charged with:
1. Two counts of Robbery
2. Two counts of Disguise with Intent

Brandon Kassa, 23, of Toronto, was charged with:
1. Possession of Property Obtained by Crime
2. Disobeying Order of Court
3. Breach of Probation

Young Person (10), of Toronto, was charged with:

On Monday, April 29, 2019, the following were arrested:

Joshua Alraie, 19, of Whitby, was charged with:
1. Nine counts of Robbery
2. Nine counts of Disguise with Intent
3. Five counts of Forcible Confinement
4. 10 counts of Possession of a Weapon
5. Seven counts of Possession of Property Obtained by Crime
6. Assault with a Weapon

Karic Browne, 21, of Ajax, was charged with:
1. Robbery
2. Disguise with Intent
3. Five counts of Forcible Confinement
4. Two counts of Possession of a Weapon
5. Possession of Property Obtained by Crime
6. Assault with a Weapon

Donato Schiraldi, 19, of Toronto, was charged with:
1. Robbery
2. Disguise with Intent
3. Five counts of Forcible Confinement
4. Two counts of Possession of a Weapon
5. Possession of Property Obtained by Crime
6. Assault with a Weapon

Fuad Giwa, 20, of Toronto, was charged with:
1. Robbery
2. Disguise with Intent
3. Five counts of Forcible Confinement
4. Two counts of Possession of a Weapon
5. Possession of Property Obtained by Crime
6. Assault with a Weapon

Micael Kellete, 24, of Toronto, was charged with:
1. Robbery
2. Disguise with Intent
3. Five counts of Forcible Confinement
4. Possession of a Weapon
5. Possession of Property Obtained by Crime
6. Assault with a Weapon


On Tuesday, June 4, 2019, the following were arrested:

Omar Parker, 25, of Brampton, was charged with:
1. Five counts of Robbery
2. Four counts of Disguise with Intent
3. Five counts of Possession of a Weapon
4. Four counts of Possession of Property Obtained by Crime

Young Person (11), of Brampton, was charged with:
1. Seven counts of Robbery
2. Seven counts of Disguise with Intent
3. Six counts of Possession of a Weapon
4. Five counts of Possession of Property Obtained by Crime
5. Use Imitation Firearm to Commit Indictable Offence
6. Assault with a Weapon

** The Young People cannot be named under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act**

- December 26, 2018: in the Markham Road and Major Mackenzie Drive East area, Markham (York Region)
- December 28, 2018: in the Steeles Avenue West and Islington Avenue area
- January 3, 2019: in the Sheppard Avenue West and Allen Road area
- January 3, 2019: in the Steeles Avenue West and Islington Avenue area
- January 6, 2019: in the Weston Road and Finch Avenue West area
- January 6, 2019: in the Karachi Drive and 14th Avenue area, Markham (York region)
- January 7, 2019: in the Weston Road and Hwy 7 area, Woodbridge (York region)
- January 11, 2019: in the Seachart Place and Hwy 50 area, Brampton (Peel region)
- January 19, 2019: in the Finch Avenue West and Islington Avenue area
- February 7, 2019: in the Sheppard Avenue West and Bathurst Street area
- February 25, 2019: in the Markham Road and 16th Avenue area, Markham (York region)
- February 27, 2019: in the Finch Avenue West and Islington Avenue area
- February 3, 2019: in the Yonge Street and St. Clair Avenue West area
- February 16, 2019: in the Dixie Road and Rathburn Road East area, Brampton (Peel region)
- February 24, 2019: in the Rutherford Road and Weston Road area
- April 15, 2019: in the Weston Road and Hwy 7 area, Woodbridge (York region)
- April 20, 2019: in the Weston Road and Finch Avenue West area
- April 29, 2019: in the Steeles Avenue West and Dufferin Street area
- May 1, 2019: in the Hwy 5 and Millgrove Side Road area, Hamilton (Hamilton)
- January 26, 2019: in the Laurier Avenue and Ontario Street South area, Milton (Halton)

Investigators are still investigating nine unsolved cellphone store robberies in the GTA, Inspector Lauren Pogue released a security camera video from one of them during the news conference.

It is reported that:

- on Monday, February 11, 2019, two males entered a cellphone store located in the Lawrence Avenue West and Allen Road area

- the males assaulted both the store employee and a 83-year-old customer with a baton

- the males fled with numerous phones
