Two men arrested in series of bank robberies,
One man charged with attempt murder of police officer,
South Etobicoke area

The Toronto Police Service’s Hold Up Squad would like to make the public aware of two arrests in relation to a bank robbery investigation where a police officer was stabbed.

Between Monday, January 25, 2021 and Wednesday, March 24, 2021, four bank robberies were committed in the South Etobicoke area.

It is alleged that:

- during the robberies a man entered the bank with a balaclava mask on in an attempt to conceal his identity

- the man approached the teller and handed over a note that said he had a gun and demanded cash

- the man took cash before fleeing the scene on foot


On Friday, March 26, 2021, at approximately 7.15 p.m., police received a report of a bank robbery in the Lake Shore Boulevard West and Allen Avenue area.

It is further alleged that:

- two men entered the bank wearing hats and masks in an attempt to conceal their identities

- both men were armed with knives

- one man stood near the front to keep an eye on the entrance

- the other man approached the teller and handed over a note demanding cash

- the man then went behind the teller counter while holding the knife and yelling at the teller


Officers from the 22 Division Major Crime Unit were working nearby and were able to arrive on scene while the men were still inside the bank.

It is further alleged that:

- officers confronted the men inside the bank

- one man ran out the rear exit with an officer pursuing him

- the officer caught up with the man and was able to place him in custody after a violent struggle

- the officer suffered minor injuries as a result

- another officer approached the man still inside the bank and got into a violent struggle with him

- the man stabbed the officer in the abdomen during the struggle, causing serious injuries

- officers were eventually able to place the man into custody

- both officers went to hospital

Members of the Hold Up Squad started an investigation.

It is further alleged that:

- the Hold Up Squad conducted a search warrant and located clothing and other evidence linking one man to several robberies


On Friday, March 26, 2021, Neelkanth Shah, 18, of Toronto, was arrested and charged with:

1. Attempt Murder
2. Aggravated Assault
3. Robbery With an Offensive Weapon
4. four counts of Robbery
5. five counts of Disguise With Intent

He appeared in court for a bail hearing at Old City Hall Court, 60 Queen Street West, on Saturday, March 27, 2021, at 10 a.m., room 111.


On Friday, March 26, 2021, Nathaniel Mohabir, 18, of Toronto, was arrested and charged with:

1. Robbery With an Offensive Weapon
2. Disguise With Intent
3. Assault With Intent to Resist Arrest

He appeared in court for a bail hearing at Old City Hall Court, 60 Queen Street West, on Saturday, March 27, 2021, at 10 a.m., room 111.

He is next scheduled to appear in court at Toronto West Court, 2201 Finch Avenue West, on Monday, May 3, 2021, at 9 a.m., room 202.
