Nearly 80 youngsters, aged 8-16, took part in the ninth annual Toronto Police Service-supported “Kicks for Kids” three-day soccer camp at Keelesdale Park recently.
Funded by ProAction Cops & Kids, the camp provided an opportunity for kids in the Keele St. W and Eglinton Ave W. community to come out and have fun and also interact with Toronto officers. “They learn team work and discipline and they have a great time out here,” said Const. Kenneth McCreight of 12 Division. The kids arrived at the camp at 9 a.m. on the first day for registration where they were provided with T-shirts and water bottles before going on to the field. Police officers assigned to four groups engaged the youths in warm-up exercises and soccer drills on the first two days prior to placing them in teams for a tournament on the final day. “This is a great opportunity for children to come out and have some fun,” said youth counsellor Joel Reid. “I am really excited.” Const. Jen Nantais organized this year’s event, with the support of Youth in Policing Initiative (YIPI) students Eugene Ofosu, Ellen Asiedu, Crystal Octave and Amos Lachmanan. by Mursal Aziz Youth in Policing Initiative Student Public Information Unit [1] [2]
