TPS Update on Funeral of Constable Jeffrey Northrup,
Planning Details for Media
Saturday, July 10, 2021
A funeral service for Constable Jeff Northrup will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, July 12, 2021 at BMO Field, 170 Princes’ Boulevard, Toronto.
The general public may choose to observe the procession as it travels from the funeral home to Exhibition Place. We ask that you please practice social distancing, wear masks and complete a COVID-19 screening form. Please do not attend if you fail the screening.
Members of the public are encouraged to view the proceedings via the TPS’ live internet stream on the Toronto Police Service’s YouTube channel or on local television stations.
Procession Route to Funeral
Road closures will commence at 9:00 a.m. around the Exhibition grounds for this event.
It is anticipated that the procession will begin at approximately 10:30 a.m. but is subject to change. At Lakeshore Boulevard and Ontario Drive, Service members will march eastbound along Lakeshore, turning left onto Canada Boulevard and proceeding onto Princes’ Boulevard.
Members will position using both sides of Princes’ Boulevard to honour the funeral cortege as they pass through. Chief James Ramer will salute the cortege before it continues to Gate 5 of BMO Field for the ceremony.
Gate 5 will also be the entrance for any VIPs. The Mounted Unit and pipers will be staged at this entrance, as well as the family awaiting the arrival of Constable Northrup.
CP24 will provide multiple-camera coverage – including exterior, interior and drone shots. This will be a pool feed for other broadcast media and will be live coverage of both the procession and the service.
Two photographers (Canadian Press) will provide pool photos from inside and outside BMO Field.
Limited numbers of media (no cameras) will be permitted inside BMO Field on a first-come first-served basis and will be seated.
There will be a media staging area outside of Gate 5 of the BMO Field which will be staffed by members of Corporate Communications. This area will allow for visuals of the funeral cortege and VIPs arriving. All media that are not pooling will be required to stay inside the staging area at all times during the procession and again, at the conclusion of the service. While the ceremony is taking place, media can leave to file copy/get other shots/broadcast etc.
The contact details for the pool are:
Troy Gallant – CP24 - Troy.Gallant@bellmedia.ca
Picture Desk – Canadian Press – email@example.com
A Toronto Police Service photographer will be inside the BMO Field taking photos on behalf of the Service. Other TPS photographers will also be outside taking photos on behalf of the Service.
Real-time social media posts will be responded to and created on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for the Toronto Police Service, the Ontario Police Memorial Foundation, Run to Remember and Canadian Police & Peace Officers Memorial accounts.
A live broadcast of the ceremony will be shown on a screen in Lot 2 for police members that are unable to be inside BMO Field due to COVID-19 capacity protocols.
A copy of the Order of Service and a background document will be available on the day.
Conclusion of Funeral
The Service is expected to conclude by 2:30 p.m. However, this is subject to change.
At the conclusion, 52 Division will leave the stadium through Gate 5 and form an Honour Guard. The cortege will then be piped out of the stadium through the Honour Guard. The Chief will conduct a final salute and the cortege will head west through the Exhibition grounds.
There will be no reception or interment following the service and all attendees will be dispersed immediately from BMO Field.
COVID-19 Restrictions and General Housekeeping
You will be required to wear a mask at all times and socially distance, where possible. Any media who go inside BMO Field should complete a COVID-19 screening form. We recommend all media attending complete the form as a precaution.
All participants have been asked to conduct COVID-19 screenings through their respective agencies and those that do not pass, will not be permitted to participate.
Please be aware, there is no on-site access to toilets and no power sockets for electronics.
Parking and Arrival Times
There is limited parking on site (see route image which sets out media parking). The roads surrounding BMO Field and Exhibition Place will be closed by 9:00 a.m. and anyone arriving after the closure time will not be able to gain access to the site in a vehicle.
An MRO will be in the parking area to direct you to the media staging area. Media are required to be inside the staging area by 11:30 a.m.
Confirm your attendance, the media outlet you are working on behalf of, how many staff are attending, and what equipment you will bring with you (how many cameras). Due to limited space, we ask that only one reporter attends on behalf of your specific media outlet. On arrival, please register with a member of Corporate Communications.
Corporate Communications will issue any changes or updates via news release on Sunday, July 11 or early on the morning of Monday, July 12, 2021.
